can help heal emotional distress resulting from traumatic experiences. The model underlying EMDR is based on the idea that past traumatic experiences not adequately processed can continue to cause distress. When these unprocessed memories are triggered by present day events, the same emotions, thoughts, beliefs and physical sensations from the past are relived and causes distress.
EMDR accesses and processes these past memories and triggers. Treatment consists of the following eight phases: Treatment Phases
EMDR has been extensively researched and is recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma. Research have further found EMDR can help with other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders that can be symptoms of underlying trauma.
EMDR can be useful for anyone who have experienced trauma but have not had the opportunity to process the traumatic event. Trauma is not limited to having experienced accidents, natural disasters or acts of violence. Traumatic experiences include bullying, neglect and harsh punishment that can damage self-esteem and confidence that in turn can lead to mental health problems.
